Ricky Malichi was born in Riverside, California but has spent the majority of his life in El Paso,Texas. He began studying music at the age of nine and focused on drums and percussion. While in High School, he received numerous awards in Solo Ensemble competitions. He was a member of the All City, All State Band and the recipient of the John Philip Sousa award as a senior. While attending the University of Texas at El Paso he was honored as Outstanding Freshman and was named most Spirited Bandsman three years in a row. He received his degree in Special Education while continuing his music studies and was very involved with performing ensembles in the Fine Arts Department. His professional music career reads like a who’s-who in the music community. He has performed with a wide variety of musical greats such as David “Fathead” Newman, Bobby Hutcherson, Herbie Mann, Chuck Berry, Mose Allison, Chris Calloway, Regina Carter, Herb Ellis and Richie Cole to name a few. Ricky was the co-founder of the performing and recording group Yoboso. The ensemble toured throughout the United States, Mexico and Australia. Yoboso was named The Instrumental Winner in the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Jazz Discovery competition. Ricky is currently performing with Stefan Schyga in a “World Beat” guitar and percussion trio, X.O. and Ruben Gutierrez and the Latin Jazz Exchange. His new jazz quartet the “MALICHI FOUR” is a fresh and exciting musical group on the scene that will be recording and touring. continue |
